Recently converted from a six to a four passenger luxury hotel barge with her interior completely rebuilt to the highest standard, the Alouette, part of the Orient-Express collection, navigates the narrow locks on the Canal du Midi.

Alouette is offered on a charter basis only, from to 2 to 4 passengers.

THE BARGE:

Constructed in 1908 as a cargo barge
Converted into a hotel barge in 1986, refurbished in 2008
Measures 98 ft. long by 17 ft. wide
Two (2) onboard cabin accommodations
Four (4) passenger capacity
Onboard air-conditioning

PERSONNEL:

Four (4) crew members who speak both English and French (some may speak other languages, as well).

MOBILITY RESTRICTIONS:

Alouette has no wheelchair access and passageways can be narrow. While there are minimal steps, the use of a wheelchair on board is not advisable. The crew can assist in any way possible, but those with extremely limited mobility may have a difficult time navigating this vessel.

DECK PLAN:

The well-planned accommodation of Alouette offers a choice of two air-conditioned twin/double staterooms with full en-suite facilities.

CABINS:

There are two (2) well-appointed staterooms on board Alouette situated well above the water line. The staterooms are decorated with elegant pearl white furniture which further enhances the overall calming ambiance of the pastel-colored accommodations. Large windows allow plenty of natural light to fill each stateroom, creating a bright, inviting atmosphere.

CABIN SIZE:

Both staterooms are equally luxurious well-decorated. The measurements of each stateroom (including bathroom area) are listed below:

  • Stateroom 1 - Approx. 269 sq. ft.
  • Stateroom 2 - Approx. 204 sq. ft.

BEDDING CONFIGURATION & SIZE:

Both staterooms can be configured as two (2) twin beds or one (1) double bed.

All staterooms have private bath facilities, complete with spacious shower, toilet, and basin.

SALON/DINING ROOM:

The spacious Salon/Dining Room is flooded with plenty of natural light due to the many picture windows. It is a calm, inviting place to unwind with a book or seek shelter from the elements. The decor is light and warm with unobtrusive colors that foment relaxation. Other amenities include:

  • 1 comfortable sofa
  • Coffee table
  • 2 armchairs
  • Writing desk
  • HI FI stereo system with CD player
  • Guest computer with internet access
  • Dining table with seating for up to five (5) people

ON DECK:

The modestly-sized Sun Deck offers an open-air gathering place for travelers who wish to view the surrounding countryside more intimately, or to engage in titllating conversation with fellow travelers amidst soothing French sunlight.  The deck furniture consists of:

  • 1 table
  • 4 chairs
  • 1 parasol

OFF BOAT:

Passengers are welcome to walk or cycle using the onboard bicycles as often as they like.  Most People choose to disembark the barge at a lock to visit local villages, then return to the canal and meet the barge further along (the barge travels slowly; therefore, this is not a problem).

An air-conditioned minibus is also available for excursions by vehicle.

The Alouette cruises the beautiful tree-lined Canal du Midi between Carcassonne and Béziers.

Rates for barges are on a shore-to-shore basis exclusive of transfers, which use local train stations as pick-up and drop-off locations.  TGV transfers to and from Paris can be booked at an additional charge of $300 per person.
